What Should You Expect at Your First Pelvic Health Appointment?

What to Know:

Your first Pelvic Health appointment is a private, one-on-one evaluation designed to help your therapist understand what is going on, what your goals are, and how your symptoms are affecting your daily life. Your evaluation takes place in a dedicated treatment room built for privacy and comfort, giving you space to speak openly, ask questions, and feel supported throughout your visit.

During your first session, your therapist will:

    • Listen to your concerns, symptoms, health history, and goals.
    • Talk through how your symptoms are affecting daily life and the activities you want to get back to.
    • Assess how your body is moving, including your core, hips, back, breathing, and movement patterns.
    • Educate you on what may be contributing to your symptoms and what treatment may look like.
    • Provide guidance on things you can start doing right away to begin your journey to improvement.

By the end of your first visit, your therapist will review what they found, answer your questions, and build a personalized plan of care focused on helping you feel more confident, comfortable, and in control.

Conditions Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy Can Help Treat

Pelvic floor problems can show up in ways that quietly affect everyday life. Leaking when you laugh, pressure that gets worse by afternoon, pain during sex, or a low back that never quite feels right. Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy helps you understand what’s driving your symptoms and gives you a hands-on plan to feel better.

Bladder Leakage, Urgency, or Frequent Bathroom Trips

If you leak when you cough, sneeze, laugh, exercise, or rush to the bathroom, Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy may help. Your Pelvic Floor PT will look at how your muscles, breathing, and movement are working together and teach you ways to improve bladder control.

Constipation or Bowel Concerns

Going to the bathroom should not feel difficult or uncomfortable. If you deal with constipation, straining, or trouble fully emptying, Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy can help your body work better and make bathroom routines easier.

Pelvic Pain or Pain with Intercourse

Pelvic pain can make it harder to sit, move, exercise, or feel comfortable during intimacy. Your Pelvic Floor PT will listen to what you are experiencing, help you understand what may be causing the pain, and create a plan to reduce discomfort.

Pelvic Pressure or Heaviness

Some people feel pressure, heaviness, or a bulging feeling in the pelvic area. This is sometimes related to pelvic organ prolapse, which happens when the pelvic floor needs more support. Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy can help you learn how to better support your body during daily activities.

Pregnancy and Postpartum Concerns

Pregnancy and childbirth can change how your body feels, moves, and functions. Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy can help with leaking, pelvic pressure, pain, core weakness, and discomfort during or after pregnancy. Your Pelvic Floor PT will help you safely rebuild strength, improve support, and feel more confident as you return to everyday activities.

Core, Hip, or Low Back Concerns

The pelvic floor works closely with your core, hips, and low back. When one area is not working well, it can affect the others. Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy can help if you are dealing with ongoing low back pain, hip discomfort, core weakness, or movement issues that never seem to fully improve. Your therapist will look at how your body moves as a whole and create a plan built around your symptoms and goals.
